Moncton Earth Day Festival– 2008
Earth Day in May is the unofficial title for this year's upcoming Greater Moncton Earth day Festival, May 2nd- May 4th, 2008. The May dates were chosen to avoid conflicting with other weekend events occurring the two weekends before and after the official Earth Day.
The festival will kick off with a Clean Energy Benefit Concert at the Studio 7 Hundred on Friday, May 2nd, Doors open at 5pm, but the show will kick in to gear at 6pm with Chris Colepaugh and the Cosmic Crew. This mini ”Live Earth” will go on to feature Marc Theriault, Love Storm, Khalid Ilidrissi, John Jerome and the Great 88, Isaac and Blewett, Rock'N Rebels and a reunion performance by Idée du Nord.
Proceeds from the Benefit Concert will go towards a Clean Energy Education Campaign. This initiative and the festival is being organized by the Conservation Council of NB, S.E. Chapter and is designed to help drive our province towards creating jobs by investing in renewable energy industries. Wind, solar, and geo-thermal energy production are now economically sound and are being implemented in various regions around the world. Large scale public awareness will motivate our elected officials to work all the more with leaders in these industries. The Clean Energy Education Campaign will inform New Brunswickers via Power Point presentations offered in community associations, public schools, colleges and universities. The Campaign will also strive to reach the public via newspapers, radio and television. The idea is to move away from nuclear energy, and uranium mining, and move toward strengthening our economy and creating jobs with clean renewable energy production.
Day 2 - Saturday May 3rd, 2008, 2:00pm – 4:30pm will feature a Tri-Community Hike & Bike River Sweep. From four starting points around the Petitcodiac Riverfront trail (see map at www.monctonearthday.com), participants will head towards the Riverfront Park next to the Fire Station on Assumption Blvd. where complimentary refreshments will be served, along with kids’ activities, entertainment, and eco-announcements.
Day 3 of the festival, Sunday May 4th, 2008, will consist of a Green Expo Extravaganza and will take place at Bernice MacNaughton High School from 12:00pm – 5:00pm. The expo will feature:

Energy Companies, and Green Companies.

►50 foot long
diner-buffet - opens at 12:30pm.
►Live Jazz /

This year's Greater Moncton Earth Day Festival is a huge non-profit volunteer initiative. The festival is being organised by the Conservation Council of NB, S.E. Chapter, and is supported by the City of Moncton, Preneal Canada Inc. and a number of other local businesses.
Head organizer, Olivier Weil explains “... that the festival in many ways is about transforming helplessness, indifference and anxiety into empowerment and motivation. People need to hear less about problems and more about solutions.”
Brent Crowhurst, an engineer and expert on renewable energy with the Falls Brook Centre will be onsite at the festival's expo to run a seminar and information kiosk about renewable energy. People will have an opportunity to learn about how these technologies are being used on an individual and regional level. And with all this talk about uranium mining and a second nuclear power plant, New Brunswickers need to learn now more than ever about the dollars and cents of renewable energy.
So set some time aside for the blue and green around you, and bring your friends and neighbours out on May 2, 3 and 4 to the Greater Moncton Earth Day Festival.
